PROTOCOL FOR SUBMITTING SAMPLES:
- Sample Size and Type: Grind 10 - 100 g of a representative grain sample at your own lab. The particle size of samples should be sufficiently fine to resemble whole wheat flour (see "Sampling Grain for Deoxynivalenol (DON) Analysis: A Researchers Guide" on the USWBSI website). Please email Yanhong Dong a picture of your ground sample before sending the samples to her lab. For special samples (e.g., green house samples), you don’t need to grind them if the weights are less than 0.5 g.
- Packaging and Labeling: Pack samples in coin envelopes (A size of #5.5 envelope is preferred, i.e., 3 1/8” x 5 1/2”) and label them with sample numbers that correspond to the submitted datasheet. The sample numbers should be consecutive. You should secure sample envelopes with rubber bands (see example 1).
- Datasheet: An Excel spreadsheet includes sample numbers, grain class (e.g., barley, hard red spring wheat, hard winter wheat, soft winter wheat, durum, etc.), and PI's information (see example 2). Please email datasheet to Yanhong Dong when submitting your samples and enclose a printed copy with your shipment.
- Ship your samples to the following address using UPS or FedEx to:
Attn: Yanhong Dong
Room P106 Stakman Hall
1519 Gortner Ave.
University of Minnesota
St. Paul, MN 55108
PH: 612-625-2751
Date considerations: We take samples year round, but data turnaround time depends on time of year and how many samples are already submitted.
