Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Wheat Health, Genetics and Quality Research Unit in Pullman Washington.

In this position, you will conduct research on the physiological and biochemical adaptation of wheat and barley at the whole plant, organ, and cellular levels to changing environmental conditions.

Duties

  • Characterizes the physiological and biochemical adaptation and responses of wheat and barley at the whole plant, organ, and cellular levels to environmental stress and changing environmental conditions.

  • Develops and applies robust approaches to link plant growth and development, grain quality, resistance to abiotic stress and low falling numbers, to specific plant physiological and biochemical processes.

  • Determines how variable temperature and moisture impact wheat grain quality, falling numbers, and subsequent seed germination and emergence.

  • Collaborates with plant breeders, molecular biologists, seed biologists, and cereal chemists to develop climate resilient wheat with high grain yield, excellent end-use quality, and high falling numbers.

  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to identify interactions among microbial communities, crop management practices, and environmental factors that impact sustainability in cereal-based cropping systems.
